Benzodiazepine Receptor Agonists

Benzodiazepine receptor agonists (BZD, BDZ, BZs), sometimes called “benzos” are a class of drugs are commonly known as minor tranquilizers. Older adults are at an increased risk of both short- and long-term adverse effects.

  • 5-fold higher risk of memory and concentration problems
  • 4-fold increased risk of daytime fatigue
  • 2-fold increased risk of falls and fractures (hip, wrist)
  • 2-fold increased risk of having a motor vehicle accident

Benzos are listed in the Beers List of inappropriate medications for older adults.
